Living in Florida has its perks, but if you’re into green spaces and green energy, there are specific places that will cater to your tastes. There are a few cities that make green initiatives a priority, lessening the carbon footprint while developing sustainable communities. Here are some of the most “green” cities in Florida:

  • Miami

The powers that be in Miami have made eco-friendly communities a priority to improve the air and water quality for all its residents. City hall uses solar power, city vehicles use alternative fuels, and all remodeled schools have green elements.

  • Ft. Lauderdale

Ft. Lauderdale is also in South Florida. This city was certified as a Florida Green Local Government since 2014 because of their recycling programs, training, vehicle use and other components that make the city eco-friendly.

  • Orlando

When you think Orlando, tourist attractions may come to mind, but the mayor initiated Green Works Orlando, which has increased recycling by 35%, planted 10,000 trees and five community gardens, expanded public transportation and retrofits homes to be more environmentally-friendly.

  • Tallahassee

The capital of Florida, Tallahassee actively participates in green initiatives. The city provides resources for residents and businesses to help promote green spaces and eco-friendly projects around the city.

  • Sarasota

This city has worked to implement sustainable and energy-efficient initiatives that not only help the environment but save money for the city and its residents. These initiatives include water conservation, retrofits and occupancy sensor installations.

  • Granada Park

Sarasota also has Granada Park, which is a completely green community. The Florida Green Building Coalition recognized this city as a Florida Green Development Destination. All homes are constructed with eco-friendly and recyclable materials. They also have energy efficient appliances, water fixtures to save and recycle water, and the community is a walking community to reduce pollution.

These are just a few areas in Florida that take energy-conservation to the next level. Many other cities are now developing initiatives that create energy-conscious space and green areas that help with air and water quality for safer environments. Is an eco-friendly area on your checklist for relocation? This list of areas can help you narrow your decision as you consider amenities, attractions, schools and other factors that will make it worthwhile.

Check with builders and contractors to inquire about eco-friendly materials and appliances that can help transform your home. It’s all about saving the environment and being comfortable while doing it.
